ISIS Cites Quran & Scholars to Justify their Position

ISIS Justify their position. People reject the idea that ISIS, Al-Qaida could be representative of authentic Islam. Toronto Senior Imam explains clearly that ISIS is not a fringe group.

Shabbir Ally is imam and president of The International Toronto Dawah Center. The following is from an interview on Let the Quran Speak, May 24, 2017. Video

Host: How can we take a balanced approach to problematic Hadith related to violence?

Well, definitely we need to take this balanced approach. Because now we live in an age in which a lot of violence is being committed in the name of Islam and we are all suffering from the repercussions of that. ISIS published its manifesto in which it cites verses of the Quran, the Hadith and rulings of Muslim scholars, and citations from tasveer, commentary on the Quran, to justify their position. And they are recruiting young people by giving them this ideology, peppered with all of these citations… basically that the Prophet PBUH said “I have been ordered to fight people until they testify that there is no God but God.” Muhammad is the messenger of God; they offer prayer and give charity.

Imam Shabbir Ally tells us ISIS is a Muslim organization that bases their actions and objectives on Islamic doctrine. Therefore ISIS does represent Islam.

Host: So basically belief in Islam.

Basically yes, and he has been ordered to fight people. It’s very general… But of course one may take this today and to not know of the context. And in any case, it’s a presumed context. And one might actually give it a general meaning and think that this Hadith prescribes for Muslims, as imitators of our prophet PBUH, to be at war with all people until they basically surrender to Islam. And this is contrary to the Quranic passages that have similar wording. In the passages of the Quran, for example in Surah 9 verse number 7 and verse number 11, the idea is that once people embrace Islam, you have to stop fighting them if you happen to be fighting them before that.  This Hadith says you have to keep fighting them till they embrace Islam. It does not leave the third option, like the option in between that they could be people who are neutral and not fighting against you. In which case you are not fighting against them and it’s immaterial whether they retain their non-Muslim status or they become Muslim in this case. We have here a contrary position. The Quran saying you must stop fighting people if they embrace Islam and the Hadith saying you must keep fighting them till they embrace Islam. Not leaving that grey area.

Allah has enjoined jihad for His sake upon the Muslims, for the great benefits that result from that and because of the harm caused by abandoning jihad, some of which are mentioned in Question no. 34830

*Surah (chapter) Al-Maidah [The Table Spread – 5]

Verse 33 [p. 100]

Indeed, the penalty 262 for those who wage war 263 against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,

Footnote 262

Legal retribution.

Footnote 263

i.e., commit acts of violence and terrorism against individuals or treason and aggression against the Islamic state.

*Surah (chapter) Al Imran [The House of Imran – 3]

Verse 28 [p. 48]

Let not believers take disbelievers as allies [i.e., supporters or protectors] rather than believers. And whoever [of you] does that has nothing [i.e., no association] with Allah, except when taking precaution against them in prudence.122 And Allah warns you of Himself, and to Allah is the [final] destination.

Footnote 122

When fearing harm from an enemy, the believer may pretend as long as his heart and intention are not affected.

Verse 34 [p.75]

Men are in charge of women182 by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband’s] absence what Allah would have them guard.183 But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance.184 – [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them [lightly].185 But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand.

Footnote 182

This applies primarily to the husband-wife relationship.

Footnote 183

i.e., their husbands’ property and their own chastity.

Footnote 184

i.e., major rebellion or refusal of basic religious obligations.

Footnote 185

This final disciplinary measure is more psychological than psychical. It may be resorted to only after failure of the first two measures and when it is expected to amend the situation and prevent family breakup; otherwise, it is not acceptable. The Prophet PBUH (who never struck a woman or a servant) additionally stipulated that it must not be severe or damaging and that the face be avoided.”

Reasons why Muslim wage jihad:

1 – The main goal of jihad is to make the people worship Allaah alone and to bring them forth from servitude to people to servitude to the Lord of people. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):  [al-Baqarah 2:193]

5 – Frightening the kuffaar, humiliating them and putting them to shame.

“Fight against them so that Allaah will punish them by your hands and disgrace them and give you victory over them and heal the breasts of a believing people, [al-Tawbah 9:14-15] Why jihad is prescribed

Was Islam spread by the sword? Undoubtedly taking the initiative in fighting has a great effect in spreading Islam and bringing people into the religion of Allah in crowds. Hence the hearts of the enemies of Islam are filled with fear of jihad. Islam spread by the sword

    1. In the Quran is codified also death to those who do not believe, death to those that change their religion death to Kafir & Mushrik. Much is also taken from ahadith. Democracy is haram. Do you agree?
