Senior Colorado imam Karim AbuZaid gave an extensive in depth lecture on the lives of demons & their purpose, in 2014. Below in a excerpt of the Introduction to the 7 part series. Intro to Demons & World of the Unseen.

We are students of knowledge and we want to discuss this subject as students of knowledge. Here is what we are going to try to cover. First of all, we want to define and describe this world. Briefly: their origin, their creation, their name, their types, their food, their drink, their marriages, their dwelling places, their writings, and their abilities, what can they do and also the things that they cannot do. Don’t assume that they can do anything. Ginn are unable to do certain things. We’re going to discover this. We will talk about the purpose why they were created. So, they were created to do what? To worship like us. The way that they received the message? Do they have their own messenger from the ginn? Or the message that is sent to the humans suffices them? We know for a fact that Prophet Mohammad PBUH he is a messenger to the ginn and to the humans. We believe that. And we have evidence in the Quran and in the Sunnah to establish that belief.

How Satan plans long-term? You know the Hadith which I narrate to you all the time. That every single morning… Satan sets his throne on water. And he basically gives incentive to his helpers from the ginn, ‘whoever does the best job today in misguiding Muslims I will place the crown with my own hands on your head.’ Disperse. Then the ginn would disperse to do their mischief. They come in the evening reporting they’re accomplishments for the day.

Donkey and dog they see ginn. Hadith that we quoted when we spoke about the angels. If you hear the crowing of a rooster ask Allah for good things because that’s rooster saw what? Angel. And if you hear the braying of a donkey seek refuge with Allah from Satan because he sees a Shaytan. If you hear the barking of a dog the braying of a donkey seek refuge with Allah because they see that which you do not see.

We believe that actually Satan has two horns. The Prophet PBUH told us when the sun rises wait until it’s fully rises, and then pray and when the sun sets wait until it fully sets and then pray. Why? Because when it rises and when it sets it rises between the two horns of Satan and it sets between the two horns of Satan. He explained that people who worship Satan they choose that time to pray.

The world of the jinn is not like the world of the unseen in the rest of the universe. But the world of the jinn collides with our world at different points in time through different individuals. This has direct relevance to our world.

Now the term jinn comes from the verb (jahannah) which means to cover or to hide or to conceal. And it’s refers to creatures who Allah created besides human beings who also have a free will but who dwell in a world which for the most part invisible to us.

They represent a parallel world to our world. Now how that parallel world exists next too ours? Some people when they hear that… How that parallel world exists with ours it’s not part of our knowledge. It is not possible to know about it. Neither do the jinn know nor do we know.

And basically, the jinn in terms of their modes of existence are of three types… One type which flies in the air all the time, another type which exists as snakes and dogs. And an earthbound type which resides in one place or wonders about. These are the three forms in which the jinn exist. Like human beings they are divided into two categories, believers and disbelievers, just . And you’ll find among them those who followed Jesus and those who followed Paul or similar ideas of corruption.

Fortune telling remains an attractive world because you have some fortune tellers who give information which turns out to be accurate. They tell you such and such is going to happen and it happened. So, without that of course nobody would bother to go to fortune tellers. Some of the things they inform us of do take place. So, where did they get this knowledge from?

Those who do not fully believe in the world of the unseen, as described here, are in danger of being labeled disbelievers. Disbelief carries a sever penalty.

Well the Prophet PBUH explained concerning the jinn that he spoke about. The first type that they are aerial, that can leave our atmosphere into the higher, outer reaches of the universe able to travel at speeds, Allah knows best. And they connect up with other jinn who hover near the first heaven. When Allah gives commands to the angels, and these commands are passed down through the heavens they are able to hear bits and pieces of information. And they relay this information down. In the process of relaying that information comets and meteorites etc. catch some of them and destroy them. But some information works its way down till it reaches that witch or Warlock, fortune teller.

The other area that our world collides with the world of the jinn is the area of magic. Some people think it’s not real. It’s all fake. tricks… In the midst of it all there are some people involved in real magic. But it is that they have made contact with the world of the jinn and the jinn operate in collaboration with them. If you see someone come into the room hold his hand and the water bottle comes into his hand. It appears to you that he has some kind of power where he can cause that bottle of water to get up off the table and come into his hand. But the reality is that it is a simple act for the jinn. You can’t see the jinn. He lifts up the bottle and puts it in the guy’s hand.

And we have the third major area after fortune telling and magic. The area of demonic possession where the jinn may enter the body of a human being. Some people say no it’s not possible. It’s not real. It’s fake. Reality is that evidence from the Quran and the sunnah indicate that it is a reality. It is authentically narrated… The prophet opened the boy’s mouth and he said ‘O! Enemy of Allah, I am the Messenger of Allah get out.’ Who is he talking to? It’s a little boy. He is obviously addressing an entity that has entered that boy.

Conclusion:

Many aspects to these teachings go against Western rational thinking. When these ideas become known to non-Muslims in large number there is potential for ridicule. Ridicule of the beliefs of Islam is viewed as insult to the prophet Mohammad PBUH. Perceived insult to the Prophet Mohammad has a propensity to cause the Muslim community to riot. .

Well that’s the idea that these jinn some of them being evil creatures who will take possession of the human body, so it’s the ginn mind controls the body. The human mind is somehow left on the back burner. It is the job of The Exorcist to then remove that gin or evil spirit so that this human mind comes to take possession of his or her own body.

So what are some of the very few stories concerning possession?

Let me share one of the Hadith so we get an idea. This is a Hadith collected from Ibn Abbas. A woman came with a son of hers and said, “O! messenger of Allah this son of mine is insane. He is seized by fits every morning and ruins our lives.” Allah’s messenger wiped him and prayed for him the boy then vomited. A black puppy came out of his mouth and ran away. Reading, this obviously is in the realm of legendary materials. For a sane Muslim scholar to collect this and be putting it in his book it means that this scholar obviously subscribes to a mindset which is not ours.

So how would you argue with things that others say? Some will say very rational such as the gin or gin possession because we don’t see it so someone else it might seem irrational

Well, I take it even further and not only say that this Hadith, but the whole idea that Jinn possess is in fact irrational.

O! You who dis-believe there is proof he was possessed by Satan. Canadian Imam Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips, who completed a PhD on Islamic exorcism at the University of Edinburgh, gave a lecture on deterring authentic demonic possession and how to attain a credible exorcism. During this talk, the Imam revealed that the Prophet Mohammad PBUH had been successfully freed from a demonic spell cast by a Jewish man in a far away village. Mohammad bewitched by Satan spell

So destroy the charm. That’s what the Prophet PBUH did when he came under the influence, Ginn [spirits] influence of magic which affected him physically. So this is a form of the touch of Shatan, satanic touch, demonic touch, which didn’t affect his Revelation. Revelation which came to him but affects some of his own perception, thinking that he did things which he didn’t do, thinking that he didn’t do things which he had done, seeing things which are far away as if they’re close, things which are close as if they’re far away. This affected him in this way. And Allah sent angels to him and his dream and informed him that it was the work of a particular individual in Medina, a Jewish magician there by the name of Lubaid Ben Al-Aasim, who had prepared this charm and put it in a well and so the Prophet PBUH told Ali Bin Tali to go find it. Dig it up. Come back. Take it apart. And the two last verses of the Quran, two last chapters, were revealed and they were read for breaking spell.

How can you tell if someone is possessed or if magic was done to them?

People who have had experience with such situations have related that the following are among the signs of a person who is possessed by jinn (or Satan).

Strong repulsion when hearing Quraan or Aathaan (call for prayers).

Inability to have sexual intercourse with one’s spouse.

Frequent miscarriage for pregnant women.

Thinking or imagining one has done something when in reality one has not.

As for curing Satan possession, the following steps are recommended:

Removing the elements of magic, as was done by the Prophet when he was struck by black magic by a Jewish man called Lubaid Ben Al-Aasim.

Eating seven Aaliya Al-Barniy dates (among the dates of Al-Madinah) first thing in the morning; if not possible, any dates will suffice, by the will of Allaah.

Cupping–removing excess blood.

Conclusion: Islam has a rich and detailed understanding of what some would consider irrational and nonsense. Imam Yasir Qadhi said

There is nothing irrational in Islam. There are things that are superarational. Meaning the human intellect cannot understand it.
